Russia Urges Iran to Stay Within Nuclear Treaty
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a press briefing that Moscow had taken note of comments by Iranian parliament Deputy Speaker Ali Nikzad concerning a possible withdrawal, adding that the remarks require additional clarification.
“We would not want Iran to withdraw from the NPT. We consider the NPT to be the cornerstone of the non-proliferation regime. And we do hope that Iran will remain an important and responsible party to this treaty,” Peskov said.
The comments came after Iranian media, including the state broadcaster IRIB, reported Monday that Nikzad had said parliament would consider a “triple-urgency” motion calling for Iran to leave the NPT.
According to reports, Nikzad said Tehran no longer trusts the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or its Director General Rafael Grossi, accusing him of carrying out “merely superficial inspections and submits negative reports against Iran.”
He reportedly added that lawmakers are examining the proposal and would debate it on the same day it is formally introduced, while also assessing the potential international consequences of withdrawing from the treaty.
Iran joined the NPT in March 1970.
Addressing the war in Ukraine, Peskov also said Moscow believes there are "no voices of reason" in Western countries advocating dialogue or seeking to repair relations with Russia.
