Five years on: Keeping learning alive for girls and women in Afghanistan

Since 2021, more than 69,000 learners have benefited from these programmes, 73 per cent of whom are women. In 2026 alone, UNESCO is supporting over 26,000 learners, half of whom are women.

UNESCO’s Skills Development and Literacy programme helps keep learning alive by bringing literacy and vocational training closer to home, in community-supported spaces. It combines practical skills, psychosocial support and community engagement, helping learners build confidence, support household well-being, and maintain pathways to future economic participation.
