Turkey refutes biased report by European Commission

(MENAFN) Ankara on Tuesday rejected a European Commission report, labeling it “biased” and claiming it contains unfounded criticisms regarding the judiciary, fundamental rights, and domestic political developments in Türkiye.

In a statement following the report’s release, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the comments were inconsistent with efforts to maintain a positive agenda between Türkiye and the EU and were phrased in a manner contrary to the long-term interests of both sides.

The ministry highlighted that the report’s acknowledgment of Türkiye’s alignment with the EU acquis reflects Ankara’s commitment to EU membership, despite political and perceived unfair obstacles encountered during the accession process.

Türkiye described the report’s recognition of its alignment with a functioning market economy and strong macroeconomic policies as “positive and timely.” It also welcomed the acknowledgment of Ankara’s constructive approach in the Eastern Mediterranean, improved relations with Greece, and enhanced dialogue with the EU.

Based on these developments, the ministry reiterated Türkiye’s expectation that the Foreign Affairs Council decisions of July 15, 2019, be swiftly repealed.

Ankara also praised the report’s references to its active, multi-layered foreign policy, efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships, and constructive role in regional peace and stability. The ministry further noted the emphasis on Türkiye’s strategic significance to the EU amid regional and global challenges, as well as its responsibilities in areas of shared interest.
